Okeechobee means “big water” in the Seminole Indian language, an appropriate name for a lake whose opposite shore cannot be seen from the water’s edge. It has a surface area of 730 square miles, but only a 9-foot average depth.

Lake Okeechobee is a teeming habitat for a wide variety of fish, wading birds, and other wildlife – attracting recreation-seekers and eco-enthusiasts from around the world!

TREEHOUSE ON KRAEMER ISLAND

The Treehouse on Kraemer Island is a unique gathering spot accessible only by airboat in the extreme southeastern area of Lake Okeechobee. It’s maintained by the Glades Airboat & Buggy Association.

LAKE OKEECHOBEE SCENIC TRAIL

Visitors can enjoy walking, hiking, rollerblading, bicycling, and horseback riding around Lake Okeechobee. Designated as part of the Florida National Scenic Trail in 1993, the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail is an approximately 110-mile trail encircling the lake. More than half the trail is paved, and the remainder consists of a two-track gravel roadway on top of the 35-foot high Herbert Hoover Dike. Open year-round.

PIONEER PARK

With over 64 acres to enjoy, Pioneer Park is open sunrise to sunset, and includes a wide variety of amenities. Visitors can enjoy athletic fields, an aquatic center, basketball and tennis courts, an exercise course, picnic pavilions and shelters, sand volleyball courts, and a walking path.

Torry Island Campground

Torry Island Campground is home away from home for many visitors who want to try their luck catching one of the "Big O's" famous wide-mouth bass. With boat ramps and 350 campsites, Torry Island also has a picnic area, on-site putting green, biking trails, fishing, laundry area, WiFi, and activities. Activities include monthly socials with potluck dinners, game and movie nights, and exercise classes.
